The Human Development Practice

By joining Human Development Practice, you will work alongside a dynamic group of people who are driven by a commitment to improve the lives of people around the breadth of human development topics. We oversee a dynamic and rapidly evolving portfolio focused around six core areas of expertise;  (1) family planning and reproductive health, (2) global health security, (3) health systems strengthening, (4) global health strategy, (5) education and (6) water, sanitation and hygiene. Our Human Development team is recognised as a global leader in providing monitoring, evaluation, learning and strategy advice and services to a diverse range of clients. Examples of our growing portfolio include: we evaluate youth-led design for sexual and reproductive health and rights solutions under our Adolescents 360 project; we are a learning partner under FCDO’s Women’s Integrated Sexual Health programme, help Gavi develop a theory-based strategic framework for its investments, and are an evaluator of anti-microbial resistance with the Fleming Fund, and are conducting an impact study for a development impact bond managed by the French Development Agency on menstrual hygiene health in Ethiopia.

 

 

The Role

 

We are recruiting for an experienced consultant to join the team to work on projects across the human development portfolio. They will contribute to the successful delivery and management of projects, build and own relationships with key client stakeholders, contribute to business development activities, share learning through knowledge products and external conferences and events, and be a part of maintaining our excellent reputation with our clients. 

 

The core technical strengths of all our consultants are focused around four key areas:

 

 

  • Evidence Advocate:  generating robust evidence and using this to support clients and shape global debates;
  • Change Agent:  supporting clients in reflecting, learning and managing change;
  • Project Manager: contributing to and building high performing project teams that deliver quality and commercial targets;
  • Trusted Advisor: building long term relationships with clients and partners that add value and deliver commercial success.

 

The Candidate

 

You will have a proven track record within monitoring, evaluation and learning assignments and led a number of project through the full lifecycle from bid to delivery within the health space; with experience in education or water, sanitation and hygiene desirable.  You may also have a post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline, but this isn’t essential. We also know that there are great candidates who will not fit everything we have described above, or who have important skills we have not mentioned. As an evidence advocate you will have led the design and implementation of M&E Projects and workstreams (ie case studies) in complex projects.   You will work within or shape processes that help clients interrogate problems (ie programme design, strategy, ToC) and challenge client or team assumptions.  As a change agent you can effectively

build consensus and influence approaches using a wide range of communication techniques.   As a project manager you can pro-actively manage clients whilst building trust, ensuring a quality focus throughout, supported by clear commercial project management skills.  As a trusted advisor you will have researched and understood client challenges, led on small proposals and been involved in all aspects of bidding, technical design, team composition and budgeting.

The salary for this role is from £35 - £38K depending on your experience.   We also offer a comprehensive learning and development programme, 24 days holiday plus additional time off over Christmas, flexible working patterns and a matched company pension up to 5%. 

 

The role is based in our offices in Brighton & Hove (East Sussex) but you don’t need to be in the office every day, we work on a hybrid basis where travel to the office is expected for key company and team events.  However, you will already have the right to live and work in the UK and as restrictions on travel continue to be lifted there will likely be opportunities to travel internationally to undertake consulting assignments.
