We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious Senior Consultant to join Itad’s Inclusive Growth and Climate Change practice. The consultant will be responsible for pursing new opportunities to expand the climate change portfolio, and leading technical aspects of ongoing MEL work.

Thematic focus

This role is with our Inclusive Growth and Climate Change practice, which recognizes that the threats posed by climate change are global and have the potential to reverse hard-fought development gains. We believe the transformative change needed to address these threats must be based on a robust understanding of what works and why. The evaluation and learning work we do to understand climate change, natural resources and resilience helps our partners to use evidence-based findings to make decisions which lead to informed investments and actionable change towards a low carbon, climate-resilient future.


The role

As a Senior Consultant, you will lead aspects of and play a key role in the strategic, technical and managerial delivery of Itad’s Climate Change work. Leadership responsibilities will be commensurate with experience. You will also support activities and projects across the wider practice.


A core part of the role will involve taking forward business development and expanding our portfolio of climate change MEL assignments.


The successful candidate will lead and support the technical and managerial delivery of such assignments, as a senior evaluator and advisor. 


The core technical strengths of all our consultants are focused around four key areas:


  • Evidence Advocate: using robust evidence to support clients and shape global debates;
  • Change Agent: guiding clients in reflecting, learning and managing change;
  • Project Manager: building high performing project teams that deliver quality and commercial targets;
  • Trusted Advisor: building and shaping long term relationships with clients and partners that add value and deliver commercial success.


As an evidence advocate you will be utilising your knowledge and experience of MEL to lead and advise others in the design and implementation of complex MEL projects and workstreams. You will have demonstrated technical expertise in designing MEL systems, tools and processes for a range of clients, and designing and delivering evaluations using a range of approaches and methodologies. You have used these methods to present evidence and analysis to clients – both written and verbally – in a clear, distilled and accessible way, facilitating engagement and use.


As a change agent you will have demonstrated facilitation and communication skills and experience, conveying ideas to clients and teams in a clear and focused style, flexing your technique to suit the environment, and in a way that generates buy-in and supports learning.


As a project manager you will have a track record in managing and leading the delivery of complex projects, setting clear direction, managing risk and ensuring delivery of high quality outputs that meet commercial targets and provide value for money.


As a trusted advisor you will have a strong understanding of how our clients work, and demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with clients that generate repeat work. You will also have experience in successfully leading complex bid processes, including building and managing large teams and consortia.


The role is based in our offices in Brighton & Hove (East Sussex), but we are open to you working anywhere in the UK. Travel to the office would be expected for key company and team events. You will already have the right to live and work in the UK and be able to undertake national and international travel when conditions allow.


The candidate

You will have a strong academic background in a relevant discipline, and broad knowledge of climate change as it relates to international development. This could be accompanied with specific expertise in one or more of the following areas: climate change resilience, mitigation, nature-based solutions, climate finance or other relevant expertise.


You will have experience of, and an appetite for, leading successful business development. You will play an active role in bidding work and ideally have a personal network and understanding of the climate change funding architecture to support this.


You will have significant experience of designing and applying a variety of evaluation approaches including quantitative and qualitative methods in development evaluations, and the confidence to use this experience to identify and deliver innovative evaluative design.


You will be adept at developing strong working relationships with clients, partners and stakeholders and have the ability to lead, manage and motivate others. You will be a confident communicator and negotiator, with commercial acumen and a proven ability to deal with staff, collaborators and partners from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.


You will have the knowledge and understanding to support other practices in the company to integrate climate change and sustainability considerations into sectors such health, education, governance and work in fragile and conflict affected states.


The salary for this role is £40-£50K, depending on your experience.  We also offer a comprehensive learning and development programme, 24 days holiday plus additional time off over Christmas and a matched company pension up to 5%.
